In addition to the Caribbean sea’s great beauty, the Riviera Maya offers yet another natural attraction known as “cenotes” (natural swimming pools). The cenotes were sacred places for the Mayans because it was the only place to obtain fresh water to drink and to cultivate. This led to the Mayans building their principal cities such as Xelha, Tulum, Muyil, Coba, and Chichen Itza (to name a few) close to the cenotes or to the entries of the beaches.

The cenotes are entries to underground rivers, located in the middle of the jungle, in which we can observe the incredible formations of stalactite and stalagmite that formed throughout hundreds of years.
